Household Uses for Alka-Seltzer
Did you know there are dozens of household uses for Alka-Seltzer around the house? We have compiled a list of tips and suggestions on its many uses that might just simply amaze you!
CLEANS PIPES: Drop 3 tablets down the kitchen sink followed by a cup of white vinegar. Leave for a few minutes then flush with hot water. Also works as a deodorizer! TOILET BOWL CLEANER: To get your toilet bowl gleaming, place 4 tablets in the toilet bowl and let stand for 30-60 minutes. Brush around the bowl and rim as you normally do and flush. JEWELRY: Place 1 tablet in a cup of warm water. Just drop in your jewelry (DO NOT USE THIS CLEANING METHOD ON OPALS OR PEARLS). Leave your jewelry in this solution for several minutes for a nice sparkle and shine. GLASS THERMOS: Not sure how to get your glass thermos clean and fresh? Fill it up with warm water, drop in 4 Alka-Seltzers, and let it soak for at least 1 hour. Rinse thoroughly. GLASS VASE/CRUET: To remove stains and residue from the bottom of those narrow-necked vases or cruets, fill them halfway with warm water and use 2 Alka-Seltzers to fizz those stains away. Once the fizzing action has stopped, rinse until clean. COFFEEMAKER/PERCOLATER: Fill your percolator or the water chamber of your coffeemaker with water and drop in 4 tablets. After the tablets are completely dissolved, run it through the brewing cycle to clean its tubing. Next, you need to rinse the water chamber by running the brew cycle several times with plain water before making your next pot of coffee. GLASS COOKWARE: Glass cookware can sometimes take overnight soaking to remove stubborn cooked-on stains. Try filling the dish with hot water and drop in up to 6 tablets. You should only have to allow up to an hour for soaking to easily scrub away these stains! UNCLOGGING DRAINS: Unclog your drains almost instantly! Drop a couple of tablets down the opening, then pour in a cup of vinegar. Wait a few minutes and then run the hot water at full force to clear the clog. This is also a good way to eliminate kitchen drain odors. SOOTHE INSECT BITES: Do mosquitoes or other insect bites drive you crazy? To relieve the itch, drop 2 tablets into half a glass of water. Dip a cotton ball in the glass and apply it to the bite. ATTRACTING FISH: If you use a plastic tube jig on your fishing line, try breaking off a piece of Alka-Seltzer and put it inside the tube. The jig will then produce a stream of bubbles as it sinks, making it irresistible to nearby fish.
