10 Basic Tips To Healthier Living

Looking for ways to improve your health? Here are 10 basic tips to achieve healthier living.

1. Move Around More
An easy step toward healthier living is to make it your goal everyday to find ways to move your body. If you have the option of taking the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator...do it! Instead of fighting for that closest parking spot nearest the door of a shopping center, park your car further down the row. Take the dog for a walk, the baby for a stroll, chase the kids in the yard, or play volleyball with friends. Walk behind the mower instead of sitting on the riding lawn mower; swim; ride a bike; hike., etc. Anything that requires moving your arms or legs is not only a good fitness tool, but it relieves stress. Think 'move' in small increments of time. It doesn't have to be an hour at the gym or a 30-minute aerobic class, tai chon do, or kickboxing. However, it's great when you're up to that. In the meantime, be more active and just move around every chance you get. Final thought: Cha, Cha, Cha...and do it!

2. Cut Fat
One of the most difficult steps towards healthier living is to avoid certain foods...the foods we love! The obvious ones to include here would be french fries, fried chicken or other fried foods, hamburgers and other fatty meats such as bacon, sausage, pork, ribs, ham, salami, etc. The following dairy products should be eaten in low-fat versions: Milk, creamers, cottage cheese, and cheeses., Eat limited amounts of sandwich meats, nuts, mayonnaise, butter, margarine, and sauces. Most of these items are readily available in a lower fat version. Final thought: Lean, mean, fat-burning machine...then be one!

3. Quit Smoking...Tobacco Kills
The jury is definitely in on this verdict. The good news is that ever since the Surgeon General announced that smoking was harmful to your health, Americans have been cutting down in their use of tobacco products.. The bad news, however, is that just recently, we've seen an increase in smoking in our adolescents and teenagers. Beware, and warn your children of the dangers of smoking. Final thought: Give up just one cigarette a day and then another and another.

4. Reduce Stress
We realize it's much easier said than done, but reducing stress is important if you wish to achieve healthier living and this can be done in a variety of ways. Some techniques recommended by experts are to think positive thoughts. Spend 30 minutes a day doing something you like (i.e., take a nice long bath; sit in the hot tub; walk along the the beach or through the park; read a book; meet a friend for coffee; play with your pets; listen to soft music; watch your favorite funny movie, etc.). Treat yourself to a massage, manicure, or facial. Meditate. Before blowing your temper, count to ten! Don't let aggravation get the best of you! If possible, avoid the people you find difficult to deal with. Final thought: When you see red, think pink clouds then float on them!

5. Protect Yourself from Pollution
Some of us don't have much choice when it comes to putting up with smog, but the least you can do is avoid hanging out in smoke-filled restaurants and bars. Also avoid busy, high traffic areas whenever possible so as not to breathe-in highway fumes; don't exercise near busy thoroughfares, and exercise outside only when the smog levels are low. Exercise indoors in air conditioning when air quality is bad. Planting a lot of shrubbery in your yard deters pollution and dirt from the streets. Final thought: Smoke gets in your eyes, your mouth, your nose and your lungs as do pollutants. Hum the tune daily.

6. Wear Your Seat Belt
This is a no-brainer and is the simplest tip we can share to healthier living. Statistics show that wearing your seat belt not only reduces serious injuries in potentially fatal car crashes, but wearing your seat belt also adds longevity. Final thought: Buckle up!

We can only guess that this is perhaps due to the fact that people who floss regularly are the ones that tend to be more health conscious? Final thought: Floss and be your body's boss.

8. Limit Alcoholic Beverages
Although recent studies have shown that a glass of wine or a drink a day (two for males) can help protect against heart disease, drinking more than that can cause other problems such as cancer or kidney and liver disease. Final thought: A jug of wine should last a long time!

9. Keep a Positive Mental Outlook
Having a cheerful outlook on life has a direct correlation to living well and being healthy. Final thought: If you're laughing and smiling you can't be unhappy!

10. Choose Your Parents Well
The link between genetics and health can sometimes be frightening. It does not mean, however, that just because one or both of your parents died at an early age of health-related issues that you will too. Learn to counteract the genetic pool you were born with. Final thought: Follow these basic tips for healthier living and you can better control your own destiny.
