The Importance of Leisure Activities in Reducing Stress.




Participating in leisure activities is a wonderful way to reduce stress in our lives. We hope that after reading this article you’ll understand just how important it is to incorporate some fun in your day to live a happier, healthier life!

It really is no wonder that so many people in today’s society have become raging workaholics. They work long hard hours on the job, and although most enjoy what they do for a living, these people need a more balanced lifestyle. Does this sound like you?

Often times it takes an illness, a heart attack, or some other physical sign of stress to force these types of people to slow down. Instead of letting this happen to you, try a change of attitude! Don’t think of time spent leisurely as time wasted, unnecessary, wrong, or a misuse of time. If we don’t allow ourselves to take time out for recreation, the results could be devastating…costing us our health, friends, or even family. If nothing else, taking short breaks can be so rejuvenating to our mind and body, making our work that much more effective.

Once you’ve decided to make leisure activities an important aspect of your daily or weekly routine, you will then have to decide just on how you’re going to unwind. This can be difficult for a lot of people, but a good place to start is looking back into your past. What were some of the activities you enjoyed as a child? What were some of your hobbies, favorite sports, or interests? Is there something you’re interested in now but just haven’t had the time?

You need to find a way to relax that is different from your work. For example, if your job consists of sitting at a computer all day crunching numbers and writing text, then try to find outdoor recreational activities such as tennis, swimming, or walking through a nature trail. On the other hand, if your job is one that requires a lot of physical activity or standing, look towards leisure activities that allow you to relax your body such as reading, scrapbooking, or boating.

Dr. Hans Selye, author and scientist, once wrote, “No one part of the body must be disproportionately overworked for a long time.” He explains this by stating it's like carrying a heavy suitcase for an extended period of time with one arm, and when you feel the pain (stress) of that arm, you then shift the bag to the other arm so that the stress is equalized and no one set of muscles is overworked. This same concept holds true in life as well, and therefore, the need for balance in our lives!
