Basidiospores is a form of toxic mildew that is found on wood that has been dry rotting. Dry rot occurs when there is a lot of moisture in the wood for an extended period of time. A classic symptom of this type of mildew is the formation of mushrooms directly on the wood as it deteriorates. These mushrooms are poisonous if ingested, and the spores from the mildew can also cause allergic reactions.


Aspergillus is a very common type. There are actually different types of Aspergillus mold, but all of them can cause severe allergic reactions. Areas that have been damaged by water are more likely to harbor this type of mold, and when people are exposed to large amounts over long periods, it can even lead to severe lung infections.


Wallemia is a unique type of mildew because it does not require moisture to grow as other forms of mildew do. Instead, it is found growing in the dust throughout homes. Most of the time, exposure to this mildew does not cause any type of adverse health effects in humans, although it may cause a serious allergic reaction in some people.


Cladosporium is a type that is commonly found on fibreglass air ducts, on painted surfaces, and on the backs of toilets. It grows in a way that makes it look like green or black pepper. Typically, this is not really toxic to humans, although it can cause allergic reactions that include a sore throat, red and watery eyes, and rashes.


Stachybotrys is what people commonly refer to as "black mold." This is one type is particularly dangerous because it releases toxins that can be inhaled and result in headaches, asthma, and even cancer. It appears black and slimy in appearance, and it is most commonly found in ceilings and behind walls. Professionals who have the equipment and expertise necessary for effective and thorough mold and mildew removal need to be called in if this type is present.

By having an understanding of some of the most common types of mold and mildew that can attack the various areas of your home, you can prevent them from forming. You can also take steps to determine what is causing strange symptoms in your family if they are suddenly suffering from allergic reactions to an unknown substance.
