Ivory Hope

Cold wisps of wind bite my nose,
Tears freeze on my cheeks.
Yet still a star glows
Glistening on the mountain peeks.
Leaning up against a tree,
With my leg limp and pained.
While creatures from the storm flee,
Here I will remain chained.
No one shall find me.
No one shall hear
My long mourning plea
My cries of pain and fear.
Shall death be my harbor?

Beauty then appears;
Hope in an ivory coat.
Through midnight eyes it pears
And a beard quite like a goat,
It’s limbs nimble and yet frail.
A path of spring melts behind
It’s white-ribbon lion tail.
And a spiral horn, to heaven inclined
The unicorn of fabled lore?

The deep blue almonds kindly see
My agony and frozen-tear trail
And understands my frightened plea
With his horn shall he me impale?
Shall it pity me and grant me aid?
Will it watch me suffer one last moon?
Or heal me with its stunning blade?
Unfold my future, unicorn, soon!
I begged in my freezing core.

His graceful neck did give a bow
And his dazzling eyes gave me security.
A shaking hand touched his brow,
I admired this last thing of purity.
Its beauty set my hopes a’glow
And filled me with light so warm.
Deep holes appeared in the snow,
For again did the hot-salt waters swarm.
While snow around us the storm did pour.

His horn of pearl rested upon
My leg’s shattered bone.
The pain was so suddenly gone!
Like the wound and marrow had been resewn!
I marveled at the creature’s power.
A miracle was it’s majesty!
Much greater than the highest tower,
More glorious than the greatest dynasty.
Grateful tears on the forest floor.

A last act of love
Brought him to my side.
I thanked the heavens
In which no stars dare hide.
I climbed aboard him
With glee in my heart.
The moon did not dim
As he dodged trees with great art.
And he raced with great speed through the night.
