Marine: A Mother's Son

She begged and pleaded with her eager son
Not to join the Corps just to play with a gun
But he swore under oath against her fighting will
To defend his country; he would die - he would kill
She begged and pleaded with her stubborn son
Not to rush into war at the side of his gun
For only fool's go looking for a fight
But before she could finish, he had boarded his flight
In his letters he wrote of the blistering heat
And the sounds of the bombs as they crashed at his feet
He said "Mom, don't worry - all is good and well
We've been sending insurgents directly to Hell"
She begged and pleaded with her crazy son
To stop all the killing, and put down the gun
But he wouldn't listen, and hung up the phone
It was the last time he would ever get to call home
Only days later, while out on patrol
The extremities of war were taking their toll
In a matter of moments, as a few seconds passed
An I.E.D. killed her Marine with its blast
She begged and pleaded with her only son
To come back to life, and pick up his gun
Return to that place where they took you from me
And kill every god damn terrorist that you see
