Positive Focusing Versus Positive Thinking....A Lesson in Personal Development

Success in reaching goals and fulfilling your dreams begins with positive focusing. Despite what you may have heard, it is not necessary to "think positive" all the time in order to reach your goals!

Let's say Bob, Jim, and Sally are all working towards the same goal and set out to achieve this goal. They all three begin at the same point at the same time. Bob happens to be a positive thinker, Jim likes to do positive focusing, and Sally is good at both focusing on the positive and positive thinking. At the start, Bob decides to sit down and do a little positive thinking to help prepare for the journey. Jim focuses on the goal and gets moving. Sally sits down and starts to work, humming a tune.Bob notices an area of negativeness within, and continues to sit, working hard to remove the "poor attitude" before moving on with his journey. Jim does not like the road, does not like the rules, does not like the weather, does not like the planned lunch, etc., but keeps moving toward his goal nonetheless. Sally keeps moving, too, while enjoying the scenery, waving and smiling at passersby, singing, thinking what good advancement has been acomplished, and is still focused on the goal she set.

Guess who gets to their goal first? It's a tie between Jim and Sally. Bob hasn't left the starting place - but is feeling much more positive than before, thank you very much. If Jim and Sally arrived at the goal at the same time, then what was the point of all that positive focusing? Why bother? Sally enjoyed her journey along the way but Jim did not....that's the only difference! As long as we stay focused on our goals and continue moving toward it, we can have all the negative thoughts we want.

In terms of goals, what's the difference? Well, if we were to ask Sally, "How would you like to work toward another goal?" Sally might respond, "Okay, that would be great because that was a lot of fun." Jim, on the other hand, might say, "Not right now! I've worked hard to get here and I would like to just take a breather for a while and enjoy my little victory."

So what's the point? There are two. First, if your thoughts are not always sweetness and light as you move toward your goal, don't worry. As long as you keep working toward your goal, you'll still accomplish it. Second, as you move toward your goal, you might like to practice focusing on the positive along the way. You don't have to "make something up" - you already have...it's called your "big goal, your dream"! You only need to look at what's in front of you and find something there to appreciate.

Our lives are filled with both good and bad things always happening while our minds react with positive and negative thoughts. It's the best of times and the worst of times, all the time. When we focus on the good things in life, we feel much better and life goes on. So, remember to keep a positive focus and work consistently toward your goal to achieve all that your heart desires!
