Driving Without A License: Not Worth the Risks

Have you ever considered driving without a license? Well it is not worth the risk.

Some people believe that they can get away with driving a vehicle without a drivers license because the odds are very low that they will get caught. However, if you end up causing a car accident or get pulled over for any reason, you could end up facing serious fines and other legal penalties. Due to this, it is never a wise idea to get behind the wheel unless you have a valid license.

What are the Penalties for Being an Unlicensed Driver?

Every state enforces its own penalties for driving without a license, but you can expect to pay a fine and potentially spend time in jail. Additionally, you could be held liable for the other driver's vehicle damage and medical expenses if you are responsible for an accident. In other words, making the decision to drive illegally could cause you to accrue hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical costs if you seriously injure someone.
In one case in New Hampshire, a non licensed driver caused injuries to two people after speeding into a parking lot. In this instance, a Personal Injury Attorney in NH states that ''the unlicensed driver will be paying more than just a ticket.'' Additional fines and fees could be charged and the driver is also responsible for the cost of all damages.

What Happens If I Forget My License?

In many cases, motorists who are pulled over without a license actually have one but forgot to keep it with them. Again, each state has its own guidelines that will determine whether or not this is a serious offense. For example, New Hampshire drivers will typically receive a ticket and a fine for operating their vehicle without having their license present to show to an officer upon request.
Fines typically range from $100-$150, but this will vary depending on the city you are driving through when you are pulled over. You will also most likely find yourself paying a driver responsibility fee one year later, and this means that your total fine could be $300.

Can I Still Get a License?

Many people view driver's licenses as something that is a basic right they will be given when they reach a certain age. However, this is legally incorrect. Instead, people are only permitted to have a license when they follow the law and pay any applicable fees and fines in a timely manner. Therefore, your odds of getting a driver's license after you have been discovered illegally driving without one will be much more difficult.
In fact, it is highly likely that you will be ineligible to receive a driver's license for a specific period of time. If you are a minor when you drive illegally, you will most likely need to wait until your 18th birthday to have the opportunity to get a license.

Unfortunately, there is typically no good way to defend the actions of an individual who chooses to drive without a license. However, it will still be vital for you to retain an experienced attorney so that you will have a better chance of receiving the minimum penalty. A lawyer can also help you fight against liability issues if the other driver was clearly at fault for the accident.
Keep in mind that driving illegally could be used against you even if you were following all of the rules of the road. Because of this, you will need legal representation to help you avoid paying an exorbitant amount of money.
Writer Melanie Fleury has had friends who have racked up the fines and fees after being caught driving without a license. She used the website of Tenn and Tenn P.A, a Personal Injury Attorney in NH, to learn more about the consequences of taking this action.
